Dave Field, ah yes. I last saw him in the late 1970s and he was about to emigrate to the USA. Wonder what happened to him?

Roy - the Guardian article was dated 2 September 1968. I think I have a scan somewhere on my PC if you're interested in seeing it.

Thanks for the comments, Roy ...

I've no idea of the name of the shopworker who was busted. The two other JPs must have been named in the trial transcript but I haven't got a record of them.

However, the Guardian article after the trial had ended does refer to the poetry reading on the beach: "David Field, another helper in the shop, was arrested while giving his weekly officially-permitted poetry reading on the beach. About 200 people heard him read a Ginsberg poem, and the policeman said some people in the crowd looked upset. The chairman of the magistrates on that occasion was not Mr Ripper, but Mr John Cuttress. Mr Cuttress said there was no evidence of annoyance to the public by the use of a word which was part of a published work by a recognised poet. He dismissed the case. The police were angry at being let down, and appealed. Lord Parker not only dismissed the police appeal, but said that the original case should never have been brought."

good to read this blast-from-the-past ...
somewhich, i have a card soliciting donations for the costs of this trial ect -- i will find it as it has a poem by Bill (Butler) on the matter and post it on my web site --
it was Bill who lured me to into piracy......
by the way, who was the shop worker who was busted for dope and who were the two other JP's?
Also, at that time, we did poetry readings/happenings on the beach in which a bloke was busted for reading "America -- go fuck yourself with your A bomb" (Ginsberg) and convicted by the JP's and appealed and won.....
