British readers should note that the Waterstones Book Quarterly has published the full print version of Hari Kunzru’s filmed interview with JGB. Still no major revelations, but yet another great quote from Ballard:
We’re all shaped by our childhoods, but particularly so if one’s childhood takes place during war — or, for that matter, civil war, famine or drought. Imagine the experiences of a 12-year-old boy in New Orleans during the flooding. You’d be marked forever by that. Not in a bad way necessarily, but it would be a reference point throughout your future life.

Well a whole generation emerged from WW2 but not everybody felt compelled to write about it. JGB is still exceptional. I think the growth of pop culture & consumerism may have been a direct result of the war years too.
