This is a brilliant essay, Simon. It brought back to mind that JGB, (I think) during his brief flirtation with medicine, was attracted to psychiatry as a specialty (what else? Trauma orthopedics perhaps?) I'm still working on my air crash essay for you but thoughts keep intruding of the near future - the first potential AirBus A-380 crash, that most monstrous silver technophallus ever built, the new gigantic and peculiar geometries of jetspeed survivability and death we must now see and explore, scaled up yet again to near-unimaginable size. I need to see this film: it may have some low-budget amateurism (like mine), but JGB as the star - (falls to scarred knees in homage). As ever, thanks for these pages.

Fascinating - especially, for me, on the 'mantra' of repetition and for fleshing out further my favourite period of Ballard's work.
Iain Sinclair himself writes a lot aorund the 'magical' power of fiction to bring into play new realities, as you probably know (although its a lot more studied than JGB).
Also Ballard himself looks super-cool, like he should be in Get Carter (that would be a dream conjunction)

John, I'm not sure why Petit was so negative about the Cokliss film. It seems personal, actually. By the way, I've seen his Moving Pictures film, and I plan to write something about it on the site in the near future.

Danny, Sinclair mentions the Nick Drake connection in his Crash book. I was going to quote the reference, but decided I'd best stick to the world of the film. I'm very glad you liked the article.

Cheers,
Simon

No surprise to see Petit griping, he seems to have made a career of it. He directed a short piece for BBC 2's Moving Pictures in 1990 concerning JGB and the absence of his works on screen. Was good to see Ballard talking but the lengthy moan from Petit failed to mention Cokliss's film at all while neglecting to list Petit himself among those British filmmakers who'd ignored Ballard's books. From his comments above he obviously knew of the film and could have shown part of it, as the BBC did in 1979 when the "Auto-erotic" sequence appeared in a Moorcock documentary, Time Out of Mind. At least Cokliss actually put something on screen, and something worth watching at that.
