Deep Assignments

Author: Simon Sellars • May 24th, 2006 •

Category: Ballardosphere, speed & violence

Over at his blog, 2ubh, sometime Ballardian contributor Tim Chapman describes how a truck, ‘drifting without signalling’, lopped off the front of his Saab. Tim wasn’t injured, and, he asserts, ‘contrary to the expectations of casual readers of Ballard, [there were] no sexual frissons to speak of’.

No doubt, when he included photos of the crash site, Tim was thinking of this JGB quote: ‘Deep assignments run through all our lives. There are no accidents’.

‘The building visible at extreme left,’ Tim writes, ‘is the new Sheffield Bioincubator, a “purpose built facility providing the ideal environment for entrepreneurial bioscience to flourish into successful business”. It’s built in the grounds of the old Jessops Women’s Hospital, where I was born. Mr Ballard, I suspect, could hardly have selected a more fitting location for this minorly fateful intersection of trajectories’.
