Not too sure, Graham. It's possibly to do with the publication, Magazine Litteraire, rather than any particular interviewer. It's the equivalent of the TLS or LRB, so a much more heavyweight title than Ballard's usual interview outlets, mainly newspapers in Britain - and that rather ties in with the more general point you make about French culture.

No problem Dan. Credit where credit's due. I know you will be biased, but I was wondering why you thought that the French interviews went deeper. Is it because the French have a non-judgmental historical regard for intellect and art, and know what questions to ask? I always meant - mean - to research how an ostensibly Catholic country could come up with existentialism and such sexual freedom.

Great interview. And translation. I speak French, but so badly after 20+ years way from high school I wouldn't even bother you with it.

Thanks for the comments, Mike, Graham; the French interviews do seem to penetrate a little bit further than most. There's more to come...

What an excellent interview. Taps into areas of Ballard that 90% of interviews don't; seems to engage him on his intellectual level. Thanks for printing this, Simon.

An interesting interview ... thanks, Dan!

It's good to see someone pushing Ballard on the issue of reality and imagination in "Empire". And I liked the bit about Jim observing the world around him as if it's a film or a magazine; I hadn't really thought of it like that, but it's very true.
